British Open:
Champion: David Causier
Runner Up: Robert Hall
David Causier defeated Rob Hall 1121-138 in the final to successfully defend the World Billiards British Open title and lift The Philip Brooke Trophy.
A field of 60 players representing several different nations travelled to the Qzone in Carlisle for this level three world ranking event, and it was world number two Causier who added yet another accolade to his decorated career portfolio.
The Teessider had few issues finishing top of his group with a 100% record and qualifying for Sunday’s knockout rounds.
In the last 16, Causier top scored with a break of 323 as he dispatched John Hughes 1071-124 before constructing an effort of 427 during a 1112-131 quarter-final win against Mark Hirst. In the semi-finals, the multiple-time world champion denied John Mullane 715-316 along with a run of 202.
Emerging through the other side of the draw was reigning English national champion and a former winner of this title, Hall.
Aiming for yet another world ranking title, the world number three went to the final undefeated having cruised through his group before eliminating Chris Mitchell, Martin Goodwill and newly crowned five-time world champion Peter Gilchrist in the last four. In his meeting with Gilchrist, Hall crafted the highest break of the tournament, a 463.
Causier, though, would prove to be in irresistible form in the title match as he rattled in breaks of 161, 200, 138 and a 360 unfinished in a one-sided victory.
This latest success completes a three-peat for Causier in the event having also won it in 2021.
In the British Open Challenge Cup, Ian Dennis defeated Steven Allen 239-176 in the final.
The next stop on the World Billiards Tour is set to be the 2024 Scottish Open that takes place at Styx in Kilcaldy on the weekend of January 27 & 28.
